About Us

On April 1, 1983 Lee and Lona Earl opened Adventureland Video in the once vibrant 5-Points Mall. With only 190 VHS titles, 10 VCRs, and 600 square feet, they began their vision of enabling their community to bring the movie experience home. A few years later, they renamed the store to Top Hat Video and moved to a larger space within the mall. A couple of locations later, we now have a permanent home in The Square @2600 in Bountiful. Our ever-growing selection now includes over 32,000 items for rent across multiple formats including 4K, Blu-Ray, DVD, and various video game systems. With Lee and Lona’s vision, and exceptional community support, Top Hat Video has become more than just a video store – it is an experience.

New arrivals out today 5/15!

Black Panther, PG13 - It's the "Lion King" of Marvel movies, in that there have already been a lot of Marvel movies, but this one stands out as one of the best. Also, it has a very similar plot to "Lion King".

Samson, PG13 - The story of Samson from the Bible, but jazzed up as an action-adventure movie! Also starring Billy Zane, so you know, he's still around. . .

Bent, R - A shamed former cop connects a murder case to a government conspiracy involving rogue agents from a top spy agency. We're not saying this movie could easily be part of the "Mission Impossible" universe (imagine Ethan Hunt accidentally killing a civilian during "Ghost Protocol"). But we're not, not saying it either.

Submergence, NR - One of those love stories where the lovers meet and then get separated by time and circumstances so they sort of just pine for each other for awhile. Inexplicably starring James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander.

New arrivals out today 5/8!

Fifty Shades Freed, R - It's finally here! The cinematic experience of the century! The third installment the the ever-less popular "Fifty Shades" trilogy. And yes, that does mean that we're all "freed" from the 7-year curse that this series has been on pop culture.

Batman-Ninja, NR - Batman gets transported through time and space to feudal Japan. Where's my movie about Batman ending up in Victorian London and becoming the basis for Spring-Heeled Jack? In fact, I'm now convinced that the creators of Batman heavily based him off of Spring-Heeled Jack. Change my mind. (We've included a picture of Spring-Heeled Jack for reference)

New Arrivals out today 5/1! (The awful pun edition)

Peter Rabbit, PG - The classic "tail" of a rabbit and his ""fur-mily" who "hop" into a farmer's "vege-paw" garden.

12 Strong, R - Yeehaw! "Saddle up" for the "unbridled" true story of the First Special Forces team, also "colt" the horse soldiers, who "hoofed it" to Afghanistan after 9/11. Please don't confuse this movie for "13 Hours" the story of the secret soldiers of Benghazi, that would be "foal".

Winchester, PG13 - Helen Mirren is "locked and loaded" as Sarah Winchester, the heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune who believes she is "in the cross-hairs" of the souls of people "gunned down" by the Winchester repeating rifle and therefore must never stop construction on her mansion.

New arrivals out today 4/24!

Maze Runner: Death Cure, PG13 - Pretty sure this is the last one of these. What even are these movies about at this point? I thought it was just a kid running in a maze. Now we're curing death? How do you cure death? Isn't that just eternal life? Is this the story of Lazarus?

Paddington 2, PG - We've been told b̶y̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶o̶v̶i̶e̶ that it is "an absolute delight". Maybe it's more geared to British audiences, but Americans should be able to enjoy it as well. Who doesn't want to watch a movie about a cute bear who loves marmalade and who also makes niche "Modern Times" references?

Hostiles, R - Not exactly a classic western, but if you like beautiful cinematography and excellent acting performances then we highly recommend.

Den of Thieves, R - Webster's dictionary defines "den" as a wild animal's lair or habitation. This movie, about a heist on the Federal Reserve Bank has absolutely nothing to do with wild animals or their lairs.

Forever My Girl, PG - A less interesting title than "Occasionally My Girl" but apparently the writers didn't agree with us. Anyways, this is that romantic drama about the country star who -- get this -- finds out he's a DAD! FOREVER!

Z-O-M-B-I-E-S, NR - A Disney Channel Original about a group of zombie teens who transfer to a non-zombie high school. It is 94 minutes. Alternatively, you could spend the same exact 94 minutes watching Trainspotting, the 1996 R-rated cult-classic movie about a group of heroin addicts, which also happens to be exactly 94 minutes long.

Dear Dictator, NR
7 Guardians of the Tomb, NR

New arrivals out today 4/17!

The Post, PG13 - Based on the true story of a cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents and pushed the country's first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between the press and the government. Don't make my mistake and assume this will basically be the same movie as 2015's "Spotlight". They are vastly different movies.

The Commuter, PG13 - "Non-Stop" but on a train. If you don't remember "Non-Stop", that was just "Taken 3" on a plane. "Taken 3" was, of course, "Taken 2" but in America and "Taken 2" was "Taken" but in Istanbul. Basically, we all convinced ourselves at some point that Liam Neeson is someone who could be really good at killing people.

Humor Me, NR - A broke playwright begrudgingly moves in with his widowed father. It stars Jemaine Clement, so chances are if you like "What We Do in the Shadows" or "Flight of the Conchords" you'll probably tolerate this.

Honor Up, R - A drug lord's lieutenant struggles to protect his crime family and his own honor after a shootout. It boasts an impressive 2.5/10 rated by 123 users on the IMDb, so you know it's going to be good.
